EMPIRE MAGAZINE
The attended audience of this magazine cover would be people interested in film and also people interested in wolverine also for example comic book collectors or people interested in marvel comics. It could also be aimed at people who like Hugh Jackman as the primary image is of him, it is basically a universal appeal this magazine cover, as the audience is vast.
The text used to draw the readers attention in, Starting of with the title EMPIRE this is also the Mast Head, this is colored in red to stand out from the page as the rest of the magazine covers text is black and white. It is used to signify the importants of the title, this also catches the readers attention as red is a striking color. The text also uses rhetorical questions “STAR WARS: The Musical?” this would give the reader the impression it is addressing them. The text it’s self is very over exaggerated, using phrase such as “Review of the year” by using the word “year” it shows me that it is the best there is, making you want to read about it. Another phrase from the magazine cover is “the worlds biggest movie magazine” suggests again the scale is so wide that you must read it as the world is reading it, these are all used to show the audience the importants of the magazine. Other techniques used in the text show a user friendly magazine using a “+” to break up the text instead of “and”. There are also many strap lines dotted all over the page, a website address is also used on the page to suggests other ways to get into. Making it even more user friendly. The text is all in block capital italics this makes the magazine jump out. Another way it engages the audience is using the word “you” again appealing to reader making them feel as if it were talking to them. The text is structured that the most important articles are on the left it’s bolder then the left this has been used as we read from left to right so It draws us in. The text is bold but the attention is mainly on Wolverine, when they are drawn in the text becomes more obvious and by surrounding him makes him stand out more.
The setting for the magazine front cover is a dessert seen this is used to emphases the movie it is advertise giving an insight to the audience on what they are going to expect from the movie, like it was a scene from the movie. I think the background has been photo shopped in to give it the over all effect of a wolverine been savage and wild. This image is trying to interpret what wolverine looks like from the comic books so it would try and be as realistic as it can to portray the character. He is wearing a tank top this used to show his muscularity on the cover, this would have the purpose to appealing to men and women through the sex appeal (easy on the eye). He is also wearing his standard jeans to show his normality, maybe show that he is down to earth giving the audience the feeling he is wild as he is wearing the bare minimum clothing in my view. He is standing in a dessert it could also be interpreted as being ironic. His hair and make up are again show wolf like characteristic, his beard looks long and wild and hair the same emphasizing the raw nature of the character in a sense. He has also has aluminum claws coming out of his hands this is to shake the image up I think as it shows a real difference, from the normality we often see in images.
A low angle shot is used to emphasis his presence on the cover and to make him look like he is powerful and holds authority in my view. The image it’s self is a long/mid range shot, this is used to show the audience the main character and what they are basically buying the magazine for I think this is more effective for say then a close up as it give real depth to character, this has been done to reveal a little about his role in the movie suggesting he's character has been made out to be a superhuman or powerful one as a way to provoke and inform you of his status in the movie. The body language suggest to me anger or frustration, his fist are clenched and claws our out this could show to the audience that he is different (a mutant) and by showing the claws it emphases that factor. It also suggests to me the anger aspect to me the photo is making a very clear statement “don’t mess with me” I think this is used to show the audience the attention of the film almost giving the insight to the nature of what the film is about. His facial expression also suggests this to me the way his eyes have been photo shopped make you feel as if he was staring into the distance almost as your protector, making him look heroic.
